The series What If...? will be part of the MCU canon.

Marvel has revealed some interesting details about their new animated series, What If...? We knew it was a series of alternate storylines in which we would see different versions of Marvel's heroes and villains, but now it's official that these stories will be part of the MCU canon.

And this is thanks to the multiverse that started from the end of the Loki series.

The series What If...? will be part of the MCU canon.

"Canon" is a term used in the world of film and television, especially in mega franchises, to identify the stories and characters that are part of the main and official universe of that saga. Anything that is not canon is an alternate story that is not related to the main movies or series.

Originally it was believed that What If...? would not be part of the canon of the MCU, but rather an alternate storyline, because of the stories that even involve zombies and a T'Challa that instead of becoming Black Panther becomes Star-Lord and is part of the Guardians of the Galaxy, among many other different stories. But now, thanks to the existence of the multiverse in the MCU, all these stories can and will be canon.

AC Bradley, lead writer for the series, mentioned to IGN that even though it's an anthology-type series (each episode will tell a different story, animated and with alternate versions of characters we already know: "The events of What If...? are canon. It's part of the multiverse of the MCU. The multiverse is here, it's real and it's absolutely fantastic folks."

A Marvel Studios producer also mentioned at a conference that, although it will be an anthology-type series, there will be one character that will be part of each season of the series. And that will be Captain Britain, the version of Peggy Carter in which she becomes a super-soldier.

"There will be one character who won't be more important than the rest, but she will have a relationship with The Watcher [a character who will observe all these events in the series and be a sort of narrator], who is the force behind the series. That will be Captain Carter.

What If...? premieres on Disney+ on August 11. A second season of the series is already in development. [by IGN]
