Forbidden islands around the world
Forbidden islands around the world
Is it true that there are islands where no one can enter? They exist and they are not few. Some of these forbidden islands are full of poisonous snakes. On others you find animals infected with serious diseases. Then there are the abandoned islands where things so grim happened that no one wants to return. However, most forbidden islands around the world function as vaults where some of the darkest secrets of past governments are kept.
Here is a list of several of these dangerous islands. They are everywhere and belong to several countries including England, Italy, Brazil, Iceland and the United States. However, one of the most interesting is the forbidden island belonging to India.
Los Farallones.
Owned by the United States, entry to Los Farallones is prohibited in order to protect rare species of animals. This remote site serves as a refuge for a large number of animal species, mainly birds. It is located on the coast of San Francisco, and in addition to the prohibition, it is difficult to access because it is a steep place surrounded by rocks.
This wildlife protection is due to the fact that the species that live there are sensitive to disturbance. In the past, Los Farallones served as a repository for radioactive waste for many years. Despite this, spectacular animals such as the elephant seal or mirounga are found there. And the presence of these mammals attracts the majestic white sharks. As you can see, there are enough reasons not to stop there, not even as a joke.
Surtsey Island.
In 2008, Surtsey Island was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is currently of great interest to scientists. According to researchers, it is the youngest island on Earth and emerged after a series of volcanic eruptions in the ocean. Scientists regularly travel to Surtsey to collect all kinds of information.
The prohibition of access to this island responds to the need to protect the environment and minimize human interference in the area. It is an unparalleled opportunity to investigate the emergence of life on Earth, the process that follows the formation of landmasses and the functioning of ecosystems without our intervention. Scientists believe that even an innocent action could interfere with the natural course of the island.
Quemada Grande Island.
Why this Brazilian island makes this list is strange, to say the least. Located off the coast of São Paulo, this small piece of land is home to thousands of venomous snakes. This makes Ilha da Queimada Grande one of the most restricted places on the planet. The official version says that when the sea level rose, this piece of land separated from the continental portion.
The snakes were trapped, and visitors have long been prohibited from entering the island. Occasionally, researchers from the Brazilian Navy arrive at Quemada Grande Island to carry out some studies. But all with prior authorization. Several species of snakes that have habitat on this island, such as the golden lancehead snake, are in danger of extinction. Some estimates indicate that more than 4 thousand snakes are scattered over the land.
Diego Garcia Island.
Seen from the air, this atoll in the Chagos archipelago looks like a real paradise. In 1937, the British government expelled all the inhabitants. Subsequently, it began construction of a relatively unknown military base. Although conspiracy theories abound around this place, the only truth is that access is highly restricted.
Some say that the intelligence services, both British and American, use Diego Garcia Island as a prison where the most dangerous criminals are tortured. Others point out that this is the destination of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370. The site is under heavy military surveillance and access to unauthorized personnel is completely forbidden.
Morgan Island.
This island in South Carolina, United States, is inhabited by extremely dangerous macaques of the Rhesus species. Not a single human being inhabits this place, because these macaques are infected with the B virus (Herpesvirus simiae). Although rare, infection in humans occurs mainly through bites or scratches from an infected macaque. Unfortunately, it is a very serious disease.
It is said that the macaques that inhabit Morgan Island arrived from Puerto Rico. They were transferred precisely because they were beginning to make the native population sick. Since then, the visit to this place is forbidden for the safety of both humans and the animals themselves.
Another disturbing fact is that the population of rhesus macaques at this site has participated in several studies on vaccines, AIDS and even bioterrorism. The only people allowed to enter the island are researchers, so that they can study the macaques. However, each visit requires authorization, caution and extreme control of the situation.
Poveglia Island.
Poveglia is an island of spectacular beauty. However, the abandonment of this site produces an apocalyptic atmosphere. And it was abandoned for a macabre reason: a long history of death and violence. Historically, the Italians used it as a quarantine center against the Black Death. And later it served as a psychiatric hospital.
Although in ruins, the site still houses a church, the old hospital, a nursing home and a bell tower. Poveglia offers the perfect setting for a horror movie. Currently, the island belongs to the state and is uninhabited. And for some time now, visits have been restricted.
Judging by historical accounts, thousands of people perished here during outbreaks of the Black Death and their bones were left there. In the center of Poveglia, a thick layer of sticky ash covers the ground: it is composed of earth, charred bodies and skeletons. There are also multiple accounts of the abominable acts suffered by the mentally ill on the island of Poveglia.
North Sentinel.
Finally, we present one of the most famous islands in the world. "Famous" from the outside, because this place is inhabited by a native tribe that presents an erratic behavior with visitors. North Sentinel is a forbidden island, and in 2018 a media case revealed the reason. That year, a missionary died on this remote Indian Ocean island while seeking to preach Christianity among the isolated tribe.
These people have kept away from civilization for centuries, and do not seem ready to change their minds. Since 2006, the Indian government has forbidden people to go closer than 3 miles (5 km) from the island. In addition to protecting the local population, the measure was implemented to avoid fatalities.
