Wasps are building fluorescent nests

Image
Wasps are building fluorescent nests A team of scientists say they have come across the first known case of animals building fluorescent houses. In a new study, they detail the finding of nests built by certain species of wasps that glow green under exposure to ultraviolet light. What's more, wasps of the same family in other parts of the world also appear capable of creating similarly creepy structures. The discovery occurred during an expedition to northern Vietnam, but not intentionally, according to the scientists. Study author Bernd Schöllhorn, a professor of chemistry at the University of Paris, told Live Science that they traveled with ultraviolet lights in the hope of stumbling upon any fluorescent bugs after dark. Instead, they found wasp nests with cocoons (woven silk structures that cover the nest and keep the larvae safe) that emitted a bright mucus-green glow when exposed to ultraviolet light between 360 and 400 nanometers wavelength at night. Like any good researche...

Hum: the smallest city in the world

Image
Hum: the smallest city in the world In the northwest of Croatia is located Hum, a town with only 25 inhabitants. According to Guinness World Records, Hum is the smallest city in the world. It is unusual for an urban center with such a small population and land area to be considered a city. In most countries of the world this would never be accepted, but in Croatian territory it is a curious reality. Hum's origins date back to the 11th century, and both the architecture and layout of the city have evolved little since then. It was originally built as a medieval castle with the intention of future urban development. And to some extent, this happened only within the city walls. From medieval castle to Croatian city. Today, a person on foot can walk through the entire city in less than an hour. Although urban development came out of the castle walls, it is just a parking lot and a souvenir store. Inside the walls the town still exists, although with little commercial activity. Fortuna...

Do you prefer dogs or cats? The answer says a lot about you

Image
Do you prefer dogs or cats? The answer says a lot about you When it comes to pets, are you a dog lover or a cat lover? The answer to this millennial question could reveal interesting aspects of your personality. Several research studies have focused on deciphering the personality traits that distinguish each group. For example, from a demographic perspective, there are notable differences between people who prefer dogs or cats. Dogs or cats? Mikel Delgado, a researcher and animal behaviorist at the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine, conducted a study in 2015 where she analyzed the personality of those who preferred one species or the other. She also took into account people who confessed to having no preference or simply disliked dogs and cats. Under the term "Big 5", Delgado encompassed the personality metrics employed by his research. These are agreeableness, conscientiousness, openness, extroversion and neuroticism. In this context, the latter trait is defined as ner...

Urban rats are getting bigger and bigger

Image
Urban rats are getting bigger and bigger Urban rats do not stop growing, they are longer and fatter compared to other rodents. It is a strange phenomenon that defies Bergmann's rule, which postulates that animals grow smaller the higher the temperature of the environment they inhabit. If you go to great lengths to avoid coming face to face with a huge rat, we have bad news. Although most of the time they are out of sight, or we prefer to ignore them, the situation can change. These rodents, ancient companions of urban life, are growing like never before. A group of researchers from the Florida Museum of Natural History was surprised to conclude a recent study . They found that these mammals are growing beyond what anyone could have predicted. The scientists analyzed the evolution of 140,000 measurements in more than a hundred mammals in North America over eight decades. Rats getting bigger and bigger. Roughly speaking, they found that urban rats are much longer and fatter than tho...

Forbidden islands around the world

Image
Forbidden islands around the world Is it true that there are islands where no one can enter? They exist and they are not few. Some of these forbidden islands are full of poisonous snakes. On others you find animals infected with serious diseases. Then there are the abandoned islands where things so grim happened that no one wants to return. However, most forbidden islands around the world function as vaults where some of the darkest secrets of past governments are kept. Here is a list of several of these dangerous islands. They are everywhere and belong to several countries including England, Italy, Brazil, Iceland and the United States. However, one of the most interesting is the forbidden island belonging to India. Los Farallones. Owned by the United States, entry to Los Farallones is prohibited in order to protect rare species of animals. This remote site serves as a refuge for a large number of animal species, mainly birds. It is located on the coast of San Francisco, and in a...

The person responsible for the Spiderman No Way Home trailer leak falls down

Image
The person responsible for the Spiderman No Way Home trailer leak falls down Sony Pictures, Marvel Studios and Disney's strategy with the secrecy behind 'Spider-man: No Way Home' went down the drain yesterday due to a leak, which happened thanks to a real goof that splashed a lot of people. Now we'll tell you everything that happened and why the question of hero or villain? for who leaked the trailer should no longer be asked. Wassila Lmouaci is the woman who recorded the leaked copy of the trailer, hence one of the main responsible parties. But she was not the one who leaked the footage directly to the networks. She is a visual effects editor who has been working for Marvel (Ragnarok and Ant-Man & Wasp) for quite some time. Her name was in the watermark and that video was sent privately to a colleague. Anyway, that was NOT allowed. Wassila was unlinked, apologized to Marvel Studios and Kevin Feige on her Twitter account but her networks were already taken down. Pos...

Chinese military satellite disintegrates into more than 20 parts after collision with Russian space debris

Image
Chinese military satellite disintegrates into more than 20 parts after collision with Russian space debris The mysterious malfunction of the Yunhai 1-02 satellite in March may have been resolved. The discarded wreckage of an old Russian rocket appears to have crashed into the Chinese satellite, in what is an ominous sign of things to come in our increasingly crowded low Earth orbit. On March 22, 2021, the U.S. Space Force's 18th Space Control Squadron posted a startling tweet announcing that Yunhai 1-02, a Chinese military satellite launched in September 2019, had broken up. The breakup occurred four days earlier, and it was unclear why this less than two-year-old satellite suddenly experienced a calamitous malfunction. In its tweet, the Space Force squadron said its "analysis is ongoing" and that it would track down the 21 pieces of newly created debris. #18SPCS has confirmed the breakup of YUNHAI 1-02 (#44547, 2019-063A), which occurred on March 18, 2021, at 0741 UTC...

Almond milk causes the death of millions of bees

Image
Almond milk causes the death of millions of bees For some time now, healthier and more sustainable food alternatives have been in vogue. This is why the consumption of almond milk has intensified. In the United States alone, the habit of consuming almond milk has increased by 250% in the last 5 years. Almond milk is a big business and also an ecological problem. Almond milk contains fewer calories, as well as zinc, iron and fiber, among other minerals. It is very nutritious, easy to digest and is an alternative to traditional cow's milk. It is recommended in different diets and medical treatments. However, behind a business that handles only in the United States 1,200 million dollars a year, hides a great ecological problem. Bees are being affected and thousands of them are dying due to stress in the pollination of almond trees. Bees are very necessary insects for life on our planet and are irreplaceable natural pollinators. However, they are also the most affected as a consequenc...

Star Wars: Visions unveils its first stunning trailer

Image
Star Wars: Visions unveils its first stunning trailer After squeezing the Skywalker saga to the point of satiety and taking few risks with its latest productions (Hello, The Bad Batch!), Disney has decided to try its luck with a completely different bet: Star Wars Visions, a series of animated shorts designed by Japanese studios. Today we have had the opportunity to see the first trailer of this new format and we must admit that the result is simply spectacular. At the moment we don't know what will be the plot of these shorts, their duration or if they will be related to each other, but based on what can be seen in the trailer, each one will have its own characteristic animation style. Now, without further ado, I leave you with the trailer of the creature. In total, Star Wars: Visions will be composed of 9 chapters, each designed by a different studio. Here is the complete list: Kamikaze Douga - The Duel Geno Studio (Twin Engine) - Lop and Ochō Studio Colorido (Twin Engine) - ...

Dogs can detect lies according to study

Image
Dogs can detect lies according to study Are you one of those who talk to your dog? Almost everyone does. Many people feel that their dogs understand them very well. That they probably sense their emotions. Let me tell you, that's not far from the truth. At least, in one specific respect. Dogs can detect lies. Says who? Science. Perspicacious This experiment was previously practiced also on small children and apes. And the results generated the surprise of the researchers. The canines disobeyed the instructions of a trusted person. But only in one case: when they knew they were being lied to or given incorrect information. The study analyzed the behavior of some 260 dogs of different breeds. The process consisted of two stages. First, they would enter into a trusting relationship with a person. They would find the food hidden in one of the two bowls they had access to, which remained covered. Then it was on to the second stage of the experiment published in The Royal Society . Ano...

We're worrying about the wrong volcanoes, study finds

Image
We're worrying about the wrong volcanoes, study finds A new study identifies several clusters of relatively small volcanoes that, if they were to erupt, would devastate critical infrastructure and the global economy. The most powerful volcanoes, needless to say, inflict a lot of damage and consequently attract much of our concern. But as new research published in Nature Communications points out, giant eruptions are relatively rare, while smaller eruptions occur more frequently. And because small volcanoes are capable of disrupting things like aviation, commerce and communications, they pose significant risks to modern civilization. "It's time to change the way we look at extreme volcanic risk," explains Lara Mani, lead author of the paper and a researcher at the Centre for the Study of Existential Risk at the University of Cambridge, in a press release. "We need to stop thinking in terms of colossal eruptions that destroy the world, as depicted in Hollywood mov...

Sumo wrestler statue scares horses at the Olympics

Image
Sumo wrestler statue scares horses at the Olympics A life-size statue of a sumo wrestler decorates the Equestrian Park at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. It is not as spectacular as the giant Gundam that decorates the climbing wall where climbing competitions have been held, but it has given more to talk about after several riders complained that the sumo wrestler statue scares the horses. The complaints arose after several of the horses in the show jumping arena made a sharp turn before entering the tenth obstacle and failed to jump. The first thing the rider and horse see as they pass through the barrier are the hindquarters of a sumo wrestler in attack position: two sizable buttocks that have been described as "very realistic." From AP News: "When you get up close, you see a big guy's (butt)," said British rider Harry Charles. "There's a lot to see," added Ireland's Cian O'Connor. "It's very realistic," echoed Teddy Vlock of...

YouTube will pay its users for uploading content to Shorts

Image
YouTube will pay its users for uploading content to Shorts TikTok is often talked about as Facebook's big competitor, but YouTube is also seeing eye to eye. Neal Mohan, YouTube's chief product officer, was on one of The Verge's podcasts to talk about the $100 million fund with which the company will begin compensating content creators who use YouTube Shorts this month. YouTube Shorts is a YouTube-integrated platform for uploading short videos with a limited duration of up to 60 seconds. It was announced in September 2020 and functions as a TikTok section within YouTube. In fact, many of the videos that are shared on Shorts are re-uploaded from TikTok. To avoid this and boost the creation of original content on Shorts, YouTube will pay creators up to $10,000 per month for making videos for the platform. The exact amount users receive will depend on the number of plays and the location of their audience, but YouTube will require that videos are original: if a user uploads wa...

The series What If...? will be part of the MCU canon.

Image
Marvel has revealed some interesting details about their new animated series, What If...? We knew it was a series of alternate storylines in which we would see different versions of Marvel's heroes and villains, but now it's official that these stories will be part of the MCU canon. And this is thanks to the multiverse that started from the end of the Loki series. "Canon" is a term used in the world of film and television, especially in mega franchises, to identify the stories and characters that are part of the main and official universe of that saga. Anything that is not canon is an alternate story that is not related to the main movies or series. Originally it was believed that What If...? would not be part of the canon of the MCU, but rather an alternate storyline, because of the stories that even involve zombies and a T'Challa that instead of becoming Black Panther becomes Star-Lord and is part of the Guardians of the Galaxy, among many other different stori...

Vaccinated people are less likely to be hospitalized and more likely to survive if hospitalized, study shows

Image
Vaccinated people are less likely to be hospitalized and more likely to survive if hospitalized, study shows Recent preliminary research from India may offer more good news for people who have received covid-19 vaccines, even against the more virulent Delta variant. The study found that fully vaccinated people who ended up hospitalized (itself an uncommon risk among the vaccinated) were less likely to get sick and die than those who were not vaccinated and were in the hospital. However, partially vaccinated persons appeared to have a similar risk of severe illness and death as the unvaccinated once hospitalized. The study is a preprint published last month on the medRxiv website . The researchers looked at the clinical outcomes of more than 1,000 hospitalized patients in the city of Hyderabad, India, documented between April 24 and May 31 of this year. The researchers say that more than 90% of the cases involved the Delta variant of the coronavirus, according to genetic sequencing...

Growing near trees favors intelligence

Image
Growing near trees favors intelligence This is an unexpected finding. A group of scientists conducted research with children. They wanted to assess whether the environment favors certain brain development. It turned out that it does. Growing up near trees favors intelligence. 3,568 students from London participated. And the ages were between 9 and 15 years old. Something was discovered in the children who spent more time near forests. They showed better cognitive performance and mental health in adolescence. But, strangely, not all natural environments are equally influential. Grasslands, lakes or rivers do not seem to have the same impact. Other studies "Natural environments favor cognitive development. And so does the mental health of adolescents. Although not all of them equally," the authors write. Some connection between mental state and trees has been detected before. It was in epidemiological studies in children, in the United States and Denmark. They showed a particu...
